Padlock Options for Storage Unit Safety

padlocks, deadbolt, storage locks, best storage locks

After choosing a secure storage facility, the next step in self storage safety is to purchase a padlock to protect your items. While storage units typically look the same, there are a variety of padlock options that perform differently.

Shackle padlocks: Shackle padlocks are, in general, unlocked using a key and are constructed of a steel or other hard metal. While these types of locks are common, they are also easy to cut with bolt cutters. Secure padlocks will feature a double lock with a thick shackle and contain a 5-pin tumbler.

Combination lock: A combination lock requires codes with a series of numbers that are lined up with the dial. Single dial locks are more secure than multi-dial locks, and require one code which is entered through alternating counter-clockwise and clockwise rotations. Once the sequence is complete, the internal lock mechanisms align, and the lock opens with a pull. When choosing a single dial combination lock, look for those with over 64,000 combination possibilities since they decrease the likelihood of code crackers.

Disc locks: Disc locks are probably your best bet for your storage unit. Disc locks are made of heavy-duty stainless steel that resists cutting. Many disc locks also have anti-pick mechanisms, double deadbolts and shielded shackles that lower the possibility of forced breakage.

One-time-use padlocks: A one-time-use padlock is a good option if you will be storing your items for a long time. A one-time-use padlock requires the lock to be cut in order to open the storage unit door. Locks like these alert you if someone has entered or opened your storage unit while you were away.

Whichever lock you choose, the security of your chosen storage facility will ultimately determine the safety of your items. Be selective with your storage company and never give out lock combinations or lose your lock keys.
