How to Preserve and Store your Wedding Dress

After the overwhelming excitement, hours of anxiety, months of planning and the final event: congratulations, you’re married! Now that the wedding over, you have lifelong happiness ahead of you, and a post-“I do,” to-do list.

Wedding dresses are often a large portion of the wedding budget. But, once you’re married, what do you do with it? You can sell, donate or store it for future generations and nostalgia.

If you choose to store the dress, be sure it is professionally cleaned as soon as possible. After dancing and celebrating all night, there may be stains and spots. Even if you can’t see anything, take the dress to be cleaned before storing it.

Once the wedding dress is refreshed, collect these items:

  • An acid-free storage box used to package garments (here’s an option)

    • The box should be large and deep enough to limit folding

  • Acid-free, white tissue paper (colored tissue paper can stain fabric)

To start, line the inside of the storage container with the acid-free tissue paper. For added protection, crumple some of the tissue and place it in the sleeves and bodice of the dress to reduce wrinkles and seam stress. Place the dress in the storage box hem-first, using pieces of tissue to separate each necessary fabric fold. One more sheet of tissue should cover the bodice and then the storage container can be closed.

Once your wedding dress is safely packed into the storage container, find a self storage facility that has climate controlled storage units. Textiles are often affected by extreme temperatures and the amount of moisture in the air. In other words, damp basements or stifling attics will not work. Climate controlled storage keeps your dress dry, cool and safe from light and environmental conditions that can harm the fabric.

One a year, remove your wedding dress from storage to make sure that the fabric and shape are well-maintained. Reminisce with your spouse, and then safely repack the dress, folding it in different places to reduce material wear.
